Why us and why this...
Why a Body-Positive Trust Grows Food Forests with Youth
At first glance a body-positive arts trust and a youth food forest programme might seem like an odd pairing. But for us it makes complete sense.
The most important body of all is Papatūānuku.
What body has been more objectified, exploited, and colonised than hers? And yet she just keeps going. Generous beyond all reason. Offering abundance and beauty and life, year after year, to the same people who keep taking more than they give.
When young people learn to tend the earth, to plant and harvest and witness her cycles, something shifts. If her body is still worthy of reverence after everything it has endured, maybe theirs is too.
Our programmes use ecotherapy and land connection to work with young people who are carrying a lot. Intergenerational trauma. Disconnection. The particular exhaustion of inheriting a world they did not break. When they grow a food forest, learn bush survival skills, and complete rites of passage, they are not just learning about sustainability. They are learning that nature is constantly changing, always creating, and genuinely magical. And that they are part of that.
We do this work with dirt under our nails, ears open to whatever the land decides to teach that day. Unpolished and real.
Older generations partied hard, trashed the house, and are expecting the kids to clean it up. Natural Leaders is how we get off the couch and join them, shoulder to shoulder, to put things right. Maybe even better than before.
Who are the OG's?
They are a group sourced from the pilot project to help deepen the roots of the program in the community. They are in the process of doing a deep dive into leadership development so that they can take their skills and knowledge out into the community to make things happen. Each has their unique skill set and together they are making change in Upper Hutt. First through personal change and then by supporting community change. There are a few more in this crew who were not with us on this day.
The adults who are holding space while the youth develop their own legacy for the next generation.
